On July 11, the early morning sky will be a spectacle as several planets align. The moon will pass through the same region as Uranus, Mars, and the Pleiades, creating a breathtaking sight. While Uranus and Neptune require binoculars or a telescope to see, Saturn is much easier to spot. As a bright steady point of light in the southeastern sky before sunrise, Saturn is the perfect target for those who want an easier and more rewarding viewing experience. Remember, stars twinkle, but planets do not, so keep this simple tip in mind when identifying planets.
The Best Dark Sky Window of the Month
One of the month's highlights arrives with the new moon on July 14, creating the darkest skies of July. This will be the best dark sky window of the month, and skywatchers in dark locations will have an excellent chance to see the Milky Way stretching across the southern sky. To get the best views, leave the city behind and drive 20 minutes or so out of town. I also highly recommend going to dark sky preserves such as Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. It's the perfect spot to escape light pollution and immerse yourself in the beauty of the night sky.
A Crescent Moon Near Venus and Earthshine
On July 16 and 17, shortly after sunset, skywatchers will be able to spot a crescent moon near Venus. During the same period, observers may also notice Earthshine, or the 'Da Vinci glow,' where sunlight reflected from Earth faintly illuminates the dark side of the moon. It's a subtle but fascinating phenomenon that highlights the intricate dance of light and shadow in our solar system.
Saturn and Meteor Showers
Later in the month, Saturn becomes easier to observe as it rises earlier in the evening. As the month draws to a close, July closes with two meteor showers peaking on the night of July 30 into July 31. The Southern Delta Aquariids could produce between 15 and 20 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, while the Alpha Capricornids are expected to generate fewer meteors but brighter ones.
